About
Prometheus is an open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit that collects and stores metrics as time series data. It features a multi-dimensional data model, a flexible query language called PromQL, and a pull-based collection model over HTTP. Originally built at SoundCloud in 2012, it is now a CNCF-graduated project maintained by a broad open-source community.
Problem
Teams need a reliable, scalable way to collect, store, and query metrics from their systems and services for alerting and observability.
For
DevOps engineers, SREs, and developers running cloud-native or containerized workloads
How it works
Prometheus scrapes metrics from instrumented targets via HTTP on a pull model, stores them locally as time series, and evaluates rules to generate alerts or aggregated metrics.
